The PDU® is the measuring unit used to quantify approved learning and professional service activities. These activities must be related to Project Management topics that are substantially consistent with the knowledge areas and processes as outlined by the PMBOK® Guide and involve appropriate expert resources. Typically, one PDU® is earned for every one hour spent in a planned, structured learning experience or activity.
Each PMP® must satisfy the PMI® Continuing Certification Requirements Program in order to maintain the PMP® Certification. PMPs® are required to obtain no less than 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs®) within a three years cycle and agree to continue to adhere to PMI’s® Project Management Professional Code of professional conduct. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways including completing project management related training. Successful completion of each PTC’s training session contributes to achievement of seven PDUs® units a day.
The overall goals of the PMI® Registered Education Provider Program may be summarized as follows:
To support the continuing professional development of Project Management Professionals (PMPs®), PMI® members, and all other stakeholders in the project management community by providing quality educational opportunities.
To provide educational opportunities for PMPs® seeking to maintain their certification under the PMI® Professional Development Program (PDP®).
To establish appropriate criteria and policies permitting PMI® to provide recognition to qualifying providers of education in the field of project management.
To provide a foundation for a cooperative effort between PMI® and the project management education and training community.
To create a forum for the exchange of ideas and best practices, and foster the growth of the project management body of knowledge.
To provide a searchable database, via the PMI® Web site, of Registered Educational Provider- sponsored PDU credit programs to the project management community.
